Fabulous Orchids

Have you ever seen a flower with the face of a monkey? Or one that looks like a bumblebee? How about a dove? These flowers might sound like something from a fairy tale, but they’re real – and they’re all types of orchid!

Orchids are beautiful flowering plants that come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colours. There are over 25,000 species of orchid and they can have flowers as small as 2mm across, or as large as over a meter! They come in endless shades of pink purple, red, orange, white, along with multicoloured! No matter the size or colour, orchids are special.

Most people are familiar with the more common (but still gorgeous) orchids, such as the moth orchid, cymbidium, and lady’s slippers.

If you receive an orchid as a gift, you can keep it indoors for its entire life. There are only a few things to know about keeping your plant happy and healthy:

1. Orchids generally don’t need much water. A rule of thumb is to water the plant once a week in the winter and twice a week in the summer (of course, this will vary, depending on how humid or dry the air in your house is).

2. Orchids don’t like cold or dry air. They prefer warm, humid air.

3. After your orchid is done blooming, you can re-pot it, if the original pot is too small. Don’t re-pot the orchid while it’s in bloom, as that can be stressful for the plant.
